Early Reading and Phonics

At St Paul’s CofE Primary School, staff and pupils follow the fun, engaging and memorable phonics programme, Supersonic Phonic Friends.

Supersonic Phonic Friends takes children on an enchanted phonics adventure, where they meet a range of woodland characters, each representing a different phonics skill:

  • Listening Len – tunes into sounds.
  • See It Sam – introduces spelling visuals.
  • Segmenting Seb – chops words into individual sounds and spellings.
  • Blending Ben – combines sounds together to read whole words.
  • Building Bill – builds words using spellings.
  • Tricky Tess – identifies tricky words and non-phonetic parts of words.
  • Nonsense Nan – reads non-real (alien) words.
  • Reading Rex & Writing Ron – support active reading and writing skills.
  • Choose to Use Suze & Switch It Mitch – guide spelling choices and spelling rules.

This exciting approach helps children develop confidence in their phonics knowledge and encourages them to apply these skills independently in both their reading and writing.
